Defending champs put unblemished streaks on the line

Defending champions Lyceum, Miriam College, St. Scholastica’s College and San Beda College Alabang will try to keep their unbeaten records going in the 41st WNCAA basketball and volleyball tournament this weekend.

Lyceum eyes a fourth win in Senior A against University of Asia and the Pacific at 2 p.m. tomorrow at the Lady Pirates gym even as La Consolacion College Manila and St. Scholastica, both winless in three starts, collide in the 3:30 p.m. main game.

Philippine Women’s University seeks a 3-0 mark in Senior B against San Beda at 8 a.m.

Two-time junior champion Miriam (2-0) battles Angelicum College (1-0) at 2 p.m. today.

Volleyball matches being held at the St. Scholastica gym will have Lyceum targeting a 4-0 mark against Miriam at 10 a.m. and Rizal Technological University wanting a share of the lead with a victory over San Beda at 1 p.m.

In the juniors level of the tournament being supported by official media partner Philippine Daily Inquirer, Mikasa, Molten, Sonak Sports Trading, official print partner Manila Bulletin, Lenovo, Solar Sports, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Taichi, Mojo, CEMG, Goody and MJC Press, defending champion St. Scholastica sets its sights on second spot versus PWU at 4 p.m. today while midget defending champion San Beda and St. Scholastica, both toting 3-0 cards, dispute solo lead at 9 a.m. tomorrow.

In futsal games tomorrow at the Miriam gym, senior defending champion PWU debuts against host Centro Escolar University at 1 p.m. while DLSZ, seeking a third straight juniors title, plays its first match versus sister school La Salle College in the 10 a.m. opener.

CEU dropped its inaugural match to RTU last week, 2-9, while La Salle and Poveda’s junior encounter ended in a 2-2 draw.

Junior basketball and volleyball matches are also slated on Monday as the nation goes on holiday to observe National Heroes’ Day. (END) 27Aug2010
