WNCAA unfurls 40th season today

Host Angelicum College promises an unforgettable opening show to usher in the 40th season of the Women’s National Collegiate Athletic Association (WNCAA) at 12 noon today at the Cuneta Astrodome.

The Angelicum Roebucks will lead 16 other schools competing in eight events - badminton, basketball, cheerleading, futsal, swimming, taekwondo, table tennis and volleyball.

Founding member Chiang Kai Shek College is back this season after a one-year leave of absence while St. Jude Catholic School is joining the country’s first and only tri-level league for women for the first time.

Angelicum plunges into action against St. Scholastica’s College in the 2 p.m. juniors match while three-time senior defending champion Lyceum tackles St. Scholastica’s College at 3:30 p.m.

Volleyball games begin tomorrow at the RTU gym with a five-game schedule.   Lyceum, seniors champion for the past nine years, takes on Miriam College at 3 p.m.   Juniors action start next Saturday, Aug. 8, while futsal competition commences the following day at a still undetermined venue.

Angelicum’s dance troupe will open the elaborate opening rites, followed by the parade of athletes and
the opening remarks of Angelicum rector and president Rev. Fr. Ferdinand Bautista, O.P.

After an inspiration message by movie personality and bodybuilding enthusiast Jackie Lou Blanco, the
39 th season overall championships will be awarded by Bautista, WNCAA president Ma. Vivian Manila and internal vice president Atty. Jose Yayen of La Consolacion Manila.  

Manila will also declare the games open and join Bautista, Yayen and special guest US Ambassador Kristie Kenney for the ceremonial toss.
 
The 40 th  WNCAA is being supported by Mikasa, Molten, Monster Radio RX 93.1, Goody, IBC 13,
Manila Bulletin, Sports Digest, Nicotina Garden Pavilion and Muscle Tape.    

Miriam was overall midgets and juniors champion last year while RTU topped the seniors
division.

Other defending champions are Philippine Women’s University (senior table tennis), San Beda Alabang
(junior cheerleading), St. Stephen’s High School (junior swimming and table tennis), La Salle Antipolo (junior badminton) and College of St. Benilde (senior badminton). (END)
